MARKETING EXPERT: MUSK’S GOVERNMENT ROLE CREATES “HISTORIC BRAND DESTRUCTION” FOR TESLA

Marketing professor Scott Galloway has labeled Elon Musk’s involvement with the Trump administration’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) as “one of the greatest brand destructions” in business history, claiming the Tesla CEO has alienated his core customer base.
Speaking on his co-hosted Pivot podcast, Galloway explained how Musk’s implementation of sweeping federal job cuts has severely damaged Tesla’s brand reputation, which has plummeted from eighth-most reputable in 2021 to 95th place today.
“He’s alienated the wrong people,” Galloway stated during Friday’s episode. “Three-quarters of Republicans would never consider buying an EV. So he’s cozied up to the people who aren’t interested in EVs.”
The marketing expert highlighted alarming sales figures showing Tesla’s European market collapse, with year-over-year declines of 81% in Sweden, 74% in the Netherlands, 66% in Denmark, 59% in France, 50% in Switzerland, and 33% in Portugal.
Musk’s recent political interventions in European affairs, including comments on Germany’s federal election and the UK’s grooming gang controversy via his social media platform X, have further alienated European consumers in what remains a crucial market for electric vehicles.
The consequences have been swift and measurable. According to automotive intelligence firm Jato Dynamics, Chinese manufacturer BYD has overtaken Tesla in European sales for the first time this April, marking a significant shift in the competitive landscape.
“This has arguably been one of the greatest brand destructions,” Galloway told co-host Kara Swisher. “Tesla was a great brand. He’s alienated his core demographic.”
Musk’s DOGE appointment came after his political action committee donated $200 million to Trump’s successful presidential campaign. The department’s claimed $160 billion in cuts may actually cost taxpayers approximately $135 billion according to the nonpartisan Partnership for Public Service.
With Tesla reporting a 71% profit decline in April, Musk recently announced he would reduce his DOGE involvement, stating his work getting the government’s “financial house in order is mostly done” and that his “time allocation to Doge will drop significantly.”
